Cuando S. Roy Sheffield comenzó a transportar flores por Chicago en 1932, los productores locales le pagaban con flores en lugar de efectivo. Así que reunió su recompensa en ramos de flores y los vendió en la esquina de Ashland y Addison por veinticinco centavos.
Durante casi 90 años, la empresa Ashland Addison Florist Co. de la familia Sheffield floreció. Justin Sheffield de cuarta generación ahora supervisa un diseño extenso, instalaciones de envío y recepción en el Near West Side de Chicago, junto con cinco puntos de venta minorista en la ciudad.
Sheffield se incorporó al negocio en 2009 después de obtener un título en ingeniería y trabajar en Caterpillar durante dos años, y se convirtió en presidente cuando su padre se jubiló en 2015. Para él, la familia es un motivador importante para el éxito. “Parte de esto es honrar el legado de nuestra familia y todo el arduo trabajo de mi padre, abuelo y bisabuelo”, dice Sheffield.
La pandemia de COVID-19 hizo que el negocio de bodas y graduaciones de la compañía se debilitara, y Ashland Addison cerró temporalmente lugares lucrativos en Northwestern Memorial Hospital y Rush University Medical Center. A pesar de esos contratiempos, la perspectiva de Sheffield sigue siendo … bueno, optimista.
“Hemos ido creciendo de manera constante en todas las avenidas del negocio”, dice. “La demanda del consumidor de plantas verdes ha sido fuerte y tenemos algo de espacio para crecer allí, así que vamos a trabajar en eso este verano”.
